Snaking through Shanghai, one architect's bid to transform a city may become a reality

There are some beautiful cities in the world, with some striking architecture as well.

But, dare we say it, there are as few designs out there which are as bold as a mooted Shanghai development, which plans to snake across the city, providing thousands of homes and offices in a light, airy snake of a building.

Bulgarian firm Sonik Module has put forward this design as the centerpiece for the redevelopment of an area along the Suzhou Creek in Shanghai.

The 60-story design has been entered into the 'Re-Thinking Shanghai 2012', with the results being announced later this year.

As Gizmag, which revealed the photographs, said: 'Sity is an attempt to bridge the gap between old China and new China with its dragon-inspired design.

'The Chinese dragon is a mythical beast denoting power and strength, elements surely befitting a structure of such size and scale.'

The structure is envisioned placed above a park and river, touching the ground at various points where people can enter the building, and there are river and road options - and a subway line.

Project co-author Anastas Kanev told Gizmag: 'The effect is sure to be very good in macroscale.

'I really hope that the people of Shanghai will enjoy and try to realize project Sity, because all of this is new urbanism and architecture for dynamic, ecologically and real sustainable life in the city.'
