Tom Cruise Katie Holmes divorce: Suri finally gets some playmates as she enjoys a visit to the museum with new friends

Life continues as normal for Tom Cruise's daughter Suri in the wake of her parents' split and she certainly seems oblivious to the drama as mum Katie Holmes keeps her busy in New York.

A playdate to the museum proved a welcome distraction for the six-year-old who is rarely seen with other children.

But that all seems set to change, as after celebrating the Fourth of July in their new home in New York with Katie's parents Martin and Kathleen, Suri and some new friends went to the Children's Museum of the Arts and later enjoyed a visit to cafe Alice's Tea Cup.

Thrillingly for the little girl she was joined by some children and their mothers, believed to be friends of the family on the outing.

It was in stark contrast to Suri's 5th birthday celebration when she was seen celebrating at a table surrounded by her much older siblings and adults.

While she clearly had plenty of presents to unwrap, she didn't seem to have any playmates close to her age to marvel at her birthday treats.

But as Katie admits she's entering a 'new phase', it seems that Suri is about to enter one too.

Later in the day the group went to Alice in Wonderland themed café Alice's Tea Cup, where Suri emerged with a shopping bag and a sparkly wand.

A source said helpful Suri insisted on holding the door open for the whole group as they left the tea house.

Father Tom is said to be extremely disappointed that Katie filed for divorce in New York, as he feels that she is trying to cut him out of their daughter's life.

A source said: 'Tom won't tolerate it and told his lawyers that if he personally needs to go to court and make a plea in front of the judge for an order allowing him to see his daughter, he will.'

It is believed Katie wants legal custody because she is worried about Tom's devotion to sci-fi cult Scientology and the effect the quasi-religious sect may have on their six-year-old daughter.

However a source told TMZ: '[Katie] was totally committed to Scientology. She had enthusiasm for it and would voluntarily and gladly participate in it when Tom was off shooting movies.

'This is not a fight over religion. It's being used as a way to hurt Tom.'

Meanwhile, an interview with Katie from next month's ELLE magazine hints that she may not have been happy in the relationship for some time.

Discussing turning 33, she told the US publication: 'I definitely feel much more comfortable in my own skin. I feel sexier. I'm staring to come into my own. It's like a new phase.'

Asked about her marriage, she admitted she wanted to focus on herself.

I think it is great to see Suri with other kids. I just noticed her hair is braided just like the other little girl she is with. What a different sort of outting this is for her. On one other web site the clerk at the tea shop where the group ate said Suri said something like it was the best day ever. So regardless of the photogs, Suri was having fun. Besides it is blazing hot in NYC and most of the US right now, we all look tired and a little on edge because there is no relief from the triple digit temps.

She's so pretty, and inocent...I wish her the best and I do believe that Kate is doing this divorce thing for her. Well done Katie, be strong! Mother's love is much strong than a "religion"...

Fantastic to see Suri around other children for a change. I can't even remember the last time I saw Katie with friends socially either unless it was Scientology related. It was always Tom Tom Tom holding into her arm and leading her around. Almost grip like. Both Katie and Suri looked utterly miserable. What a change already even though Suri doesn't like the media attention. It may take Suri time to adjust to being a normal kid. With Katie's family and friends now back around her i'm sure they'll get through it.

It seems too little too late. She doesn't appear to know what to do with them. I don't think she was socialized properly, always shopping with Katie. Still, nice to see a step in the right direction.

This little girl is the only one I have ever felt sorry for, in this fake relationship.

It's incredible how we've seen this little girl grow up - from the earliest stages, consistently miserable looking and alone... and now different, less scared, more unsure of herself - the option to be a little girl suddenly - to hold a cuddly toy and have friends, what a different world she suddenly sees before her. Can we leave the paps at home please, give the child some time to finally BE a child, and stop risking the few friends she finally has becoming too scared of photographers to spend any time with her.

Suri looks so sad! Her eyes say it all but the action of holding her blanket very close to her says something more than just sadness! She's just a little girl people need to stop taking her picture!

It's nice to see her dressing like a child. And walking. The bottom-feeders that are taking her photo constantly should be ashamed of themselves. For the love of pete, let the kid go out without blinding her with flashbulbs and making chaos wherever they go. And though I've never cared one way or the other about Katie Holmes (Tom Cruise disgusts me and creeps me out), I seriously doubt she would ever say anything to their daughter about Tom. She seems like a good mother who loves her child and good parents don't bad-mouth the other parent, no.matter.what.

honestly, she just seems to be very weary of always being photographed

The 1st photo of suri is heart breaking. The look in her eyes is indescribable. Regardless of what her parents are going through they need to step up and protect this innocent little girl.
