With the semi finalists battling to reach the final week of The Apprentice, northerner Adam Corbally fell at the last hurdle and was fired.

Lord Sugar made Adam Project Manager of Team Phoenix with Jade Nash and Nick Holzherr, while Ricky Martin put himself up to lead Team Stirling with Tom Gearing.

For the final task, candidates had to create a new luxury product range that could be sold in times of austerity, and pitch it to industry experts, as well as Lord Sugar himself.

Team Phoenix chose to make some designer high end chocolates and Sterling went for the mail grooming market.

After meeting product advisors they got down to producing their items ready to present to the experts.

Tom and Ricky found it difficult to agree on a product name but eventually settled on Modern Gentleman, and Jade came up with Sweet Thing for Phoenix.

After pitching their concept, packaging and branding, the teams headed back to the boardroom for Lord Sugar to interrogate them.

Ricky explained that he wanted to be Project Manager for the third time because after two previous losses in the role, he was determined to prove himself.

He outlined why they selected to produce a male grooming range before Lord Sugar explains that he felt that the branding was a bit boring.

He said: 'A quality product looks the business, that didn’t look the business to me.'

Lord Sugar then turned to Adam and Team Phoenix and explained that he was impressed with the visuals of their prototype shop, but questions their behaviour at the boutique chocolate shop.

Jade informed Lord Sugar that she had devised the brand name and Nick Holzherr added: 'Absolute credit to Jade. She came up with the name, she came up with quite a few of the product ideas.'

Having taken in feedback from his advisers and judged the products himself, Lord Sugar revealed the results.

The reaction to Sterling’s presentation was very good; the detailed research they had done came across, but the prototype shop seemed a bit sparse and the product branding was boring.

The retailers thought Phoenix’s presentation had the wow factor but as soon as they started talking during the pitch, it went downhill.

In the end, Lord Sugar felt that Sterling had the better business proposition as it was far more professional and thought out.

Tom and Ricky were not given a treat for this week's victory but they were at least through to the final, while someone in Adam's team would be fired.

At the Losers Cafe, losing Project Manager Adam was adamant that he will still get through to the final, despite his failure.

He said: 'There’s no way on the planet that it will be me that goes tomorrow, no way.'

Back in the boardroom, Lord Sugar questioned Phoenix’s pricing strategy and said: 'The price doesn’t stand up in the mass market superstores, because it’s too expensive, and the price in the luxury store that you had wasn’t expensive enough.'

Adam confessed that that was his responsibility but Lord Sugar asked about Nick’s involvement, as he had always seen him as a numbers man.

Nick defended himself and said that he had emphasised frequently to Adam that they needed a strategy, as well as insisted that they didn’t dilute the brand and should choose luxury hot chocolate as their product, and said: 'I did try, but I failed.'

Karren Brady, however, chimed in and said: 'You didn’t try that hard.'

A confused Adam told Lord Sugar that he didn't know where it went wrong but Nick and Jade made it clear they felt Adam was to the blame for the failure of the task.

Lord Sugar, Nick Hewer and Karren then deliberate and Karren expresses her support for Jade, and said: 'She was the good parts of this task.'

Back in the boardroom, Lord Sugar asked the three candidates why they should get through to the final, and Adam quickly turned on his fellow teammates.

He said: 'I think Nick has fluked his way to the final.

'Jade, unfortunately, I've seen no special talents in her through the whole process. Jade hasn't proved she is good at in anything she has said she can do.'

Jade and Nick both fought their corners though and Lord Sugar was left with a tough decision.

Lord Sugar made up his mind and said: 'Adam â€" I’ve got to tell you, you have impressed me in the manner in which you have thrown yourself into everything head first.

'That aggression, that ambition and that enthusiasm, that in itself is fantastic really, and you’re a good salesman also.'

He continued: 'If you win the task you don’t get fired, simple as that. So I think all in all, on this very difficult decision I’ve got to make, I’m going to have to say that â€" Adam, I think it’s time for you to leave the process, you’re fired.'

A defeated but smiling Adam replied: ''If you ever need a salesman, you know where I am.'

Jade and Nick both breathed sighs of relief that they will be joining Tom and Ricky in the final, and headed back to the house.

Love this show

So glad that Adam's gone, sexist and so cocky for someone who doesn't know nothing.

Their idea of the shop was good on paper but in the real world it was never going to work. The other was boring but it's supposed to be sophisticated, not tacky looking. Just hope Jade doesn't win, she is shockingly bad most weeks.

I lost interest halfway though tonights programme. I don't know if the episodes are being edited badly, but this years candidates have been bland and boring. Is The Apprentice only attracting accountants and former bankers, who we know are totally characterless? It's time the series was fired.

Good down to earth hard worker well done Adam!

It about time the cocky arrogant uneducated idiot got the boot.
