Men with classic 'hard man' faces are actually big softies, claim brave scientists

  • Men with 'wide', aggressive faces actually more helpful
  • 'Hard men' put their group first rather than themselves
  • People with aggressive faces are more self sacrificing

You can't judge a book by its cover - particularly when it comes to aggressive-looking men who you might cross the street to avoid.

A new study by psychologists at St Andrews University found that men with a more dishonest and aggressive appearance were more likely to sacrifice themselves for their close friends.

A good example of a hard man with a softer side is Vinnie Jones - the former soccer tough nut who now does charity work.

A new study by psychologists at St Andrews University found that men with a more dishonest and aggressive appearance were more likely to sacrifice themselves in honour of close friends.

The research, led by Dr Michael Stirrat and Professor David Perrett, also found that the more masculine looking men put their group first when competing against others.

The university said the study, published this week, lends greater understanding to masculinity and male group behaviour and overturns previous theories that masculine looking men are ‘bad to the bone’.

Dr Stirrat, a researcher at the School of Psychology's Perception Lab, explained: ‘Dominant looking men - typically characterised by wide faces - are often portrayed as 'bad to the bone', but we wondered whether the relationship between facial width and personality was really so simple.

‘We suspected that men who look aggressive and untrustworthy might actually be good guys in some contexts.’

Vinnie Jones a great guy! Could just possibly played for England? Chose Wales instead - and learned to sing Welsh anthem IN WELSH! Contrast that with John (the vulcan) Redwood ,who as Welsh secretary looked a shambolic mumbler at the Welsh Conservative conference years back!

I love you ... you love me ... we're as happy as can be! ... how about a group hug so that we can share our pink and lavender astral energy emanating from our chakras? I absolutely love bonding moments like these over a nice cup of coffee while we chat about silly things ... I need to run now, I'm beginning to get a little misty-eyed thinking about the love of my many friends in the village, who seem to be approaching the castle with pitchforks and torches ... gosh, isn't it nice to have neighbors who are willing to help with yardwork in the dark of night? ... thanks for understanding ...

My hubby is like this however he can ne very selfish on the flip side
