We know she can hold a tune thanks to her performance at last year's Oscars.

But it sounds like Anne Hathaway has been putting the practice in for her role in upcoming film Les Misérables.

The Hollywood actress's singing takes centrestage in the first preview of the epic movie due out in December, which also stars Amanda Seyfried, 26, Hugh Jackman, 43, Russell Crowe, 48, and Eddie Redmayne, 30.

Looking gaunt, the 29-year-old belts out classic I Dreamed A Dream against a moody backdrop of 19th century France.

At one stage in the preview, Hathaway is seen weeping as she has her long locks chopped. The actress actually had her hair cut off in the film and is also thought to have gone on a controversial 500-calorie-a-day crash diet where she shed a stone in 20 days.

Les Misérables, which is directed by King's Speech Oscar winner Tom Hooper, tells the story of ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, (Jackman) who is hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole.

When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette (Seyfried), their lives change forever.

All the dialogue in the film is sung live by the actors; usually they would lip-sync to a pre-recorded track.

Hooper told USA Today it was the only way he wanted to do it.

He said: 'If you are miming to a playback, even if the synchronisation is done very well, there is a part of you that knows something is off, something is false. When it's live, you believe it so much more.

'The actors have complete freedom rather than following a recording done three months before.'

And Hooper had praise for Hathaway's performance. He said: 'Anne has been an extraordinary exponent of singing live.

'Her I Dreamed a Dream is just jaw-dropping. It is so raw and heartfelt. It's done in a way you could never do in playback.'

Jackman said it was actually easier to sing live rather than having to pretend to be singing along to a track.

Cannot wait for this, even if it does star the shockingly annoying Anne 'look at me' Hathaway

Sophie, USA: "I'm still trying to see the beauty in Anne Hathaway. She looks like a guppy to me. Her short hair makes it even worse." She's not in the film to look beautiful. She's an actress playing the part of a desperate, downtrodden, heartbrokan woman. I think she looks marvellous in the part, from what I can see here, and she sounds lovely, appropriate, and totally "in character".

It is a shame most people will remain ignorant yet romantically titillated while watching this highly skewed revisionist version of an extremely savage socialist "revolution". Don't get fooled again

" I've always absolutely loved the stage show and sob my heart out each time I watch it. In fact, I start sobbing as soon as I hear the opening bars of 'Send Him Home' and 'Castles in the Sky' and 'I Dreamed a Dream' and in fact all the other wonderful songs of this fabulous musical masterpiece! - barbHbb, East Sussex, 31/5/2012 0:26 " The song is called 'Bring Him Home' not 'Send Him Home'! Geez!

She must have a good canvas......she looks amazing when she's all 'glammed' up - cute even.

What a face ache. She creeps me out.

I CAN'T WAIT!!! Probably my favourite stage musical for the story, acting and music. I love Les Mis!!

Oh, I just can't wait to see Les Mis, The Movie!!! I've always absolutely loved the stage show and sob my heart out each time I watch it. In fact, I start sobbing as soon as I hear the opening bars of 'Send Him Home' and 'Castles in the Sky' and 'I Dreamed a Dream' and in fact all the other wonderful songs of this fabulous musical masterpiece! This is going to be something very special indeed!!!!!

I think her voice sounds amazing for the role. You can hear the pain in it. Tom Hooper made an excellent decision to record the songs live to give them that raw edge! Am very much looking forward to seeing the film!

I must be watching something else, I did not like it at all. Anne is a lovely actress but I agree with Sir Cameron macintosh, producer of Les Mis, that Subo OWNS this song and despite having a lovely voice Anne Hathaway is not in Subo's league vocally. - Jess, UK, 30/05/2012 22:29 You're either being sarcastic or you're completely insane.
