The classic Aga oven - first invented in the Twenties - has entered the 21st century with a bump - a new web-connected model can be turned on with a text message.

The ovens, which are traditionally left burning 24 hours a day, have become cult objects with fans such as Kate Winslet and the Duchess of Cornwall.

The new models have a phone SIM built in, and their ovens can be turned on remotely - a simple text message turns them on, and you receive a confirmation such as 'Roasting Oven Activated.'

'The AGA iTotal Control cooker's three ovens (roasting, baking and simmering) are remotely operated, so you can ensure the cooker is warm and supper will be cooked at exactly the time you need it - wherever you are in the world. Essentially, you can sync your AGA at the touch of a button,' says a spokesperson.

It can also be controlled from within the home via apps on tablets and smartphones such as iPads.

It's the latest in a series of updates designed to haul the classic cast-iron stoves into the 21st century - with Aga having 'gone electric' only recently.

The cast iron casing of the oven effectively holds the heat, which then radiates through the collection of ovens and hotplates.

Understanding the Aga’s eccentricities has not always been easy, but supporters â€" who include the Duchess of Cornwall and Kate Winslet â€" insist the stoves are able to deliver tasty, moist meat and perfectly baked bread and cakes.

Unlike most electric ovens, which bombard food with hot air, Aga says its version uses the same system of radiant heat that makes its traditional stoves a success.

Electric elements are embedded in the cast iron and the heat used in the cooking process radiates from all the metal surfaces.

Significantly, the modern version takes from 22 minutes for the ovens to heat up.

The ovens were first made in Britain, at Coalbrookdale, in the Shropshire hills, in the 1920s. They are still built in Shropshire today.

I have an aga but can't cook in it to save my life, good for heating the kitchen though!

The cooker for those who can't cook. Ugly contraptions that are only effective at keeping a kitchen warm. Those who can't, buy aga.

I had a solid fuel version years ago and was glad to be rid of it. Horrible to start up when left to go out and made the kitchen unbearably hot in summer. Waste of expensive fuel at the best of times. I eventually bought a small gas oven to cook with during the hot weather. However the makers had a brilliant advertising wheeze by appealing to the snobs among us and trying to flog us lesser mortals the idea that by buying one we too could live the country-house lifestyle. More fools them.

I have to say that we love our Aga to bits. Its cooks to perfection, we can put a casserole in the simmering oven in the morning and by the evening the meat is so tender and the veg cooked to perfection. It comes in useful when it's freezing outside as it doubles up as a backside warmer and the dogs now have a rug in front of it as they seem to spend allot of their time there. We have a backup oven and hob in the utility as we switch it off this time of year and then have it serviced, so it gets a break until late September but we are always glad to have it back on. Its an amazing feeling to come down on a cold early morning and have that warm as toast feeling coming from the kitchen.

My friend moved in to a house with one few years ago, lovely condition and she gave it to a scrap man.. :-0 such a sin!

I love my Rayburn/Aga Multifuel. It lives on pallets which are free. In return it heats my water to shower hot within half and hour. At the flick of a switch it heats my radiators. Can't wait for our first winter together. No coal, for gas, no VAT, simples.

Having being brought up with one I wish I still had one, just too warm here for one. One thing though, it's not an AGA cooker or an AGA oven or an AGA stove, it is just an AGA.

It would be fun to see how that would work with my wood fired stove. Lighting and firing one of those definitely could not be done via an app!!!!!!!!!!!!

We just love our Aga to bits we lie next to it in the winter with our paws up against it and it is pure bliss in fact we think we are in heaven...................our mummy dries all her clothes on it and it irons them as well, our food is cooked in the Aga which is sooooooo tasty, the rest of the house is freezing cold but our Aga is our favourite place to be............................................zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..
