Victor Meldrew

Super grass: If you had a neighbour like the fictional grump Victor Meldrew, would you shop him to the authorities?

The dilemma

My next door neighbour is, to put it politely, a miserable old man who is flagrantly defying the hosepipe ban.

This is a man who refuses to interact on a civilised neighbourly level and who is breaking the law.

He has previously called the police when friends of mine parked their car outside his home, even though there are no restrictions on parking and they caused no inconvenience.

I wouldn't mind so much that he has ignored my polite over-the-fence attempts to remind him about the ban but he's out there every day watering his greenhouse and a patch of newly sewn lawn under an overhanging tree - with a hosepipe, in the rain.

I really don't want to get involved in any tit-for-tat nonsense with a man who lost his wife a couple of years ago and is obviously rather lonely but we're all going to pay for this kind of abuse in the long run with higher water bills and further restrictions.

Ho w does one deal with these sorts of people?

Yes! Get dialing. Help increase the water companies profits - maybe it'll help them not bother to increase your water charges as much if they make money from elsewhere. Getting one over the miserable "guy" is a bonus!

I think you will find the old fool has already drowned in the biblical deluge pouring from the heavens.

Why dont you ring the water company up and ask 'them' to fix their leaky pipes then there wouldn't be a hosepipe ban.

Shop him, then stand in the front garden cheering as he is led away.....

Yes you SHOULD shop someone using their hosepipe as it shows they don't care about other peoples right to water! The water company should come along fine them if genuine proof available take away the hosepipe.

I believe you will find it is ok for certain people to use a hosepipe under health and safety rules and disability conditions. It would be very unfair to expect an older person to have to fetch and carry water to do some watering. A single person would use a fraction over time as to what a family would use so act in a reasonable way and never park outside another persons property without asking permission first. Many residents have had to resort to having dropped kerbs to stop this type of parking or even having to put obstacles outside to reserve their parking space.

One rule for life and its easy "Treat other people as you would wish to be treated yourself" the flip side to this coin is if your neighbour is like the hypothetical one above then of course you should "Treat him as he as treated you" and do it with a clear conscience as well!

All conditioned things are impermanent. First, work out your own salvation, with diligence....The Buddha's last words.

It's a strange drought as it has been raining everyday for the last 2 weeks. I'm on a meter anyway. I never waste water, the problem is those who are not on meters!

I think you should shop the prime minister for giving all our wealth to the financial institutions.
