A South African airline is offering passengers an unusual deal - a free flight for their fourth wife.

In a cheeky nod to the recent marriage of polygamous president Jacob Zuma - who made Gloria 'Bongi' Ngema wife number four at the weekend - Kulula Airlines launched a 'Fourth Wife Flies Free' promotion.

The airline's Facebook page announces the 'world first', saying: 'Inspired by regular VIP travellers with sizeable spousal entourages, the offer is open to all fourth wives when the family travels together on the Jo’burg to Cape Town route.'

Strange coincidence: The airline's campaign is certainly a creative way of grabbing column inches

The deal - which lasts until April 30 - specifies that 'the family must have already bought a kulula.com ticket for all wives and husband'.

Passengers can then hand over the ticket, proof of marriage and ID to receive a refund, the offer adds.

Aside from the latest union, Mr Zuma, 70, has married five times - he divorced South African cabinet minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma in 1999 and another wife, Kate Mantsho-Zuma, committed suicide in 2000.

The leader of the African National Congress and his new wife are understood to have enjoyed a traditional Zulu ceremony with his three other spouses present.

South African law permits the practice of polygamy.
