Post natal regret: Half of British parents confess to having second thoughts after naming their child

These days it seems sticking to traditional baby names like Charles or Olivia could be branded a touch old-fashioned.

But Brits following in the footsteps of A-liters like the Beckhams may be left regretting their 'trendy' choice.

Research carried out has found that 43% of parents confessed to having second-thoughts after naming their child.

More shockingly, of that 43%, 19% admitted to ‘not liking’ their child’s name and a further two per cent owned up to aggressively disliking it.

The survey by DottyBingo.com also showed that of the 43% who had second thoughts, 22% claimed that their child’s name ‘grew’ on them.

It is believed that these relatively high percentages are due to some parents opting for trendy celeb names which go out of fashion when the stars fade from the spotlight.

A spokesman from DottyBingo.com explained: 'Modern British culture is saturated with so-called celebrities who after their 15 minutes of fame disappear into obscurity or have a spectacular fall from grace.

Imogen Thomas Katie Price

A few scandals down the line could result in a child being tarnished with the infamy of its namesake, like Imogen or Jordan

'Parents who name their child after one of these celebs are then left with a name which they’re not happy with.

'Whilst names like Wayne, Coleen, Tulisa and Imogen have proven to be popular in recent years; a few scandals down the line could result in a child being tarnished with the infamy of its namesake.

'The perfect example of this would be the great swathes of parents naming their child Jordan in the late nineties to be left regretting it when Katie Price ditched the name.'

On a lighter note the poll identified that an overwhelming majority (57%) were as happy now with their child’s name as they were the day it was born.

The spokesperson concluded: 'I believe the reason why the vast majority of parents remain happy with their child’s name is because the classic names like Oliver and Emily continue to be popular. You know what they say, the old ones are the best.'

Post natal remorse: Half of British parents have second thoughts after naming their child....................................And the other half have second thoughts about having them in the first place..................................

Who in their right mind would call their child Wayne??!!!!!! - mj, middleEngland, 27/4/2012 14:42============His mother Waynetta?

One of the most chavey names I ever heard - Nevaeh.....that's heaven spelt backwards..lifted from a dreadful US programme called Maury .

When I was pregnant I told my bump that if it was a boy then I would call him Baldrick. It was a boy but I was nice, forgave him and called him James. Very glad I had a little boy now as I love him to bits...and his name too.

What do people expect naming their kids after trends? You have to be pretty dim not to realise trends change. Really, their child should mean more to them than the oppurtunity to jump on the latest band-wagon. Lost count of how many of the teenage pregnancies at my school went for Demi-Leigh or Jayden!

As a teacher, I have had students begging me not to use their real name at registration and giving me the more traditional name they want to be known as. Sad...

As a teacher with 20 years experience it has been challenging finding names I like but don't associate with children I've taught. I won't tell you what my three are called but I will say they are unlikely to be one of five kids in the class with the same, yawn, name!! Some parents really lack imagination!!!

I hated my parents. - Aloysius Tarquin Smith, England, 27/4/2012 13:27 - CAN'T FAULT IT!

My mum chose my name because it's unusual, but not modern/ trendy. I'm happy with it, don't know anyone else with the same and it sounds classy, even though I'm not!

Kids are cruel, so you have to anticipate any playground clangers before you commit them. My daughter was going to call my grand-daughter Erin Jade - both lovely names (but orangeade, right?). And there's nothing worse than those awful neo-biblical names... "Josh, Josh!, JOSH!!!" Gaaagghh!!! Far better to stick to the good old-fashioned traditional names - especially for boys!
