An American rollercoaster superfan is aiming to break a Guinness World Record by riding Blackpool's The Big One for a stomach-churning 103 days.

Richard Rodriquez, a 54-year-old accountant, plans to spend eight hours a day on the ride at Blackpool Pleasure Beach from May 31 through to mid September in a bid to set a new world record for the longest time spent on a rollercoaster.

He will travel at heights of 235 feet and will reach speeds of 85mph during his attempt and says he has been training for months to ensure he can endure the feat.

Aiming high: Richard Rodriguez plans to spend 103 days riding Blackpool's The Big One

Mr Rodriguez already holds 17 world records for riding rollercoasters and says this is to be his grand finale before retiring.

He wants to break the current Guinness World Record of 102 consecutive days riding a rollercoaster.

He told the Blackpool Gazette: 'The Big One is a great ride and will really test me to the limits of my endurance.'

It is not the first time the American has tested himself on the peaks and dips of The Big One.

In 2007, he spent 17 days on the ride, only taking a five minute break every hour to change clothes, have a shower or enjoy a meal.

He was going head to head with two challengers at Freizeitland Gieselwind park in Germany, but they dropped out after 36 hours for medical reasons.

Nick Thompson, deputy managing director of Blackpool Pleasure Beach, told the Blackpool Gazette: 'We are delighted to welcome Richard back, he is like part of the furniture here now.

'It is a massive challenge he is undertaking and very physically demanding.'

Marathon man: It's not the first time Richard Rodriguez has attempted world records at Blackpool Pleasure Beach

The adrenaline junkie has been at the theme park this week, testing the ride to gear himself up for the record attempt.

He said: 'This is a challenge of epic proportions and I cannot wait to get going on the Big One. I have a long association with Pleasure Beach and have always enjoyed taking part in various challenges over the years but this one really will test me to the limits of endurance.

'This week has been great training on the roller coaster and I am looking forward to the marathon starting properly on May 31.'

Visitors to the Pleasure Beach from May 31 are invited to ride with Richard while he takes part in the record attempt.
