Block party: The Lego hotel offers families tonnes of brick-themed fun
My four-year-old son Max had packed his suitcase three weeks before our trip to Legolandâs new resort hotel and my six-year-old daughter Mia was on red alert, too.
Expectations were dangerously high. âWow,â said Mia, as we pulled up outside the colourful hotel.Â
Seconds later, a giant Lego dragon guarding the entrance let out a roar and Max, whoâd slept for most of the journey, woke up.
âAre we there yet?â he asked, rubbing his eyes as the dragon breathed smoke over our car. âI think so,â I said.
After 16 years Legoland has its own hotel at the theme park in Windsor. It is by a large lake on the edge of the 150-acre resort and has t aken 18 months to build.
Inside, everything is made from tiny Lego bricks, right down to the flower vases. Rooms are based on three themes: pirates, kingdoms with knights and princesses and Indiana-Jones-style adventure.
Our destination was the pirate rooms on floor three, and even the lift seemed in good spirits, telling jokes on our journey up.
Unlocking the bedroom door we boarded our very own pirate boat, with swords, skulls and starfish covering the decking carpet, a shipâs wheel mirror and, of course, our own Lego mouse.
âMummy, a spider!â squealed Mia from the bathroom. But there was no need to panic; that was made from Lego, too.
âWhatâs in here?â asked Max, eyeing up a treasure chest guarded by a Lego monkey in the corner of the room. Weâd been set a treasure hunt, and the next 15 minutes were spent scrambling around the bedroom for clues.
Prizes in hand, the children headed to their own cabin, separate d from our room by the bathroom. They were soon on their bunk beds watching CBeebies on their own TV.Â

Shiver me timbers: Rooms are based on three themes: pirates, knights and princesses and adventure
My husband and I were equally impressed. We liked the attention to detail, such as a mini-toilet seat for the children and a big box of Lego bricks so they could construct their own models â" although Max was slightly disappointed that the bath was not made from Lego.
âIt would leak,â we tried to explain. It was time to venture into the park, aimed at children between the ages of two and 12.
It was the first Legoland outside the home of Lego in Denmark and offers a mix of rides, live shows and even building workshops.
The submarine ride, new last year, was first on our list. âSharks!â shouted Max, as our Lego vessel ent ered the water and the fish swam up to the windows.

Underwater adventure: The Atlantis Submarine Voyage is just one of the attractions to entertain guests
âAnd mermaids,â said Mia, pointing to the amazing deep-sea Lego sculptures.
The next day we tried out the pirate-themed splash pool with water blasters, slides and even a see-saw. There were squeals of excitement when I got soaked with the water cannon.
The children then raced to the popular driving school. Here, under-fives are given a quick lesson in how to steer, stop and accelerate, then let loose in giant Lego cars on a mini-road network.
âLook, I havenât crashed,â called Max, waving â" and promptly steering into the pavement, causing a pile-up of pre-schoolers.
Five minutes later he emerged proudly clutching his first driving licence. I hope he doesnât get his real one quite so easily.
