Its misty skies, majestic hills and clear blue waters make it the otherworldly destination that has attracted artists and writers from across the globe

So it’s hardly a surprise that film director Ridley Scott has chosen the Isle of Skye as one of the locations for his new alien sci-fi blockbuster Prometheus.

The film, which is due for release on June 1, has a star line-up including Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, and Charlize Theron.

The first screening of the trailer last weekend contained stunning landscapes of Skye’s jagged hills tearing through the mist, along with striking shots of the Old Man of Stor. It caused a storm on  Twitter, with the social media lighting up with excitement and the trailer ‘going viral’ across the web.

Following the enthusiastic reception of the preview, VisitScotland has predicted an influx of sci-fi fans to Skye this summer.  Chairman Mike Cantlay said:  ‘As thousands of holidaymakers discover every year, Skye possesses an ethereal, out-of-this-world quality, so it is no surprise that Ridley Scott chose the island to shoot scenes for Prometheus.

‘Research has shown that one in five people is inspired to visit  Scotland after seeing it on film or television, and I am sure that Skye’s inclusion in the latest movie by one of the UK’s most celebrated filmmakers will have a positive impact on tourism in the region.’

Skye is the largest and most northerly island in the Inner  Hebrides, renowned for its  spectacular scenery, vibrant  culture and heritage, and its abundant wildlife.

The film is Scott’s return to the sci-fi genre after more than 30 years, and few would bet against it becoming one of this summer’s  biggest blockbusters. Scott initially embarked on Prometheus as a  prequel to the 1979 Academy- winning blockbuster Alien, which has spawned a media franchise of  novels, comic books, video games, and toys, as well as three sequels and two prequel films.

But he now downplays the connection between the two films, in order to appeal to younger sci-fi fans. According to Scott, although the new film shares ‘strands of Alien’s DNA, so to speak’, and takes place in the same universe, Prometheus will explore its own mythology and ideas.

The film is expected to trigger a huge following of its own among a new wave of younger sci-fi fans. Meanwhile, Scott has already  suggested that if the film is a  success, he would be interested in pursuing sequels.

The film, which is set in the late 21st century, considers how human civilisation could be linked to highly advanced extra-terrestrials.

A team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

In addition to Skye, filming also took place in Canada, England, Iceland and Spain and the film  was shot entirely using 3D cameras and required no conversion in post-production.
