Titanic 2 ship: Australian billionaire Clive Palmer commissions 21st-century replica

Just weeks after a special memorial cruise to mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, an Australian billionaire has announced plans to build an exact replica of the doomed liner.

The 21st-century version of the famous ship will be historically accurate and will make its maiden voyage from England to New York in 2016.

RMS Titanic is pictured embarking on its ill-fated maiden voyage on April 5, 2012

Historically accurate: Titanic II will have the same dimensions as its predecessor, which featured nine decks and 840 rooms

Clive Palmer has commissioned Chinese company CSC Jinlin Shipyard to build Titanic II - a life-sized replica of the White Star Line's ship.

An historical research team will help to draw up the plans for the vessel, which will have the same dimensions as its predecessor, and will feature nine decks and 840 rooms.

Mr Palmer said: ‘Titanic II will be the ultimate in comfort and luxury with on-board gymnasiums and swimming pools, libraries, high class restaurants and luxury cabins.’

The only differences will be below the water line - the ship will be powered by diesel rather than coal and will include a bulbous bow for greater fuel efficiency, plus an enlarged rudder and bow thrusters for improved manoeuvrability.

It will have four smoke stacks like the coal-powered original, but they will be purely decorative.

Australian mining magnate Clive Palmer announces his plans to build a 21st century version of the Titanic

Grand ambitions: Mr Palmer said his replica ship would offer guests the ultimate in comfort and luxury

Mr Palmer said the replica would be ‘every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic’ but will have state-of-the-art 21st-century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems.

When asked whether the new replica would sink, Mr Palmer replied: ‘Of course it will sink if you put a hole in it.

‘It is going to be designed so it won’t sink. It will be designed as a modern ship with all the technology to ensure that doesn't happen.

‘But, of course, if you are superstitious like you are, you never know what could happen.’

Titanic II is the first of four luxury cruise ships Mr Palmer has commissioned CSC Jinling Shipyard to build.

The construction is expected to begin next year but the cost has not yet been revealed.

It is not the mining magnate’s first venture into tourism â€" he already owns a luxury holiday resort on the Sunshine Coast.

Mr Palmer called the project ‘a tribute to the spirit of the men and women who worked on the original Titanic.’

More than 1,500 people died in the sinking of the Titanic, which at the time was the world's largest and most luxurious ocean liner.

The vessel struck an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York on April 14 1912 and sunk less than three hours later.

Good on him. We all have our projects we'd like to do, and his happens to be rebuilding the Titanic. As for me, I am looking for people to help fund my project: Iceburg II. :3

Australia is still part of the commonwealth and share our flag and queen so all the bullies poking fun @ gary pohlmann, old saybrook ct, usa, you all need to get a life and grow up, we know what he meant, nasty nit picking bullies. I agree with his points which is what we were supposed to be reading. If he is that rich then no need to cut corners in building, build the athentic article in Belfast and Liverpool

built in Ireland no over place if it was it would't be like the Titanic the guy says he'll make it like the Titanic was it need to look like and come from the same place as the R.M.S Titanic i'm going to be on the Titanic 2 when it sails for the first time and 1 in 1million chains it will not sink lol basically build it in Belfast build it in Ireland make it like the R.M.S Titanic make it a Irish ship we can call Titanic in memory of the R.M.S Titanic and all the people that gone down with it.

Titanic 2 needs to be made in the home town of the Titanic a.k.a it has to be built in Ireland no over place if it was it would't be like the Titanic the guy says he'll make it like the Titanic was it need to look like and come from the same place as the R.M.S Titanic i'm going to be on the Titanic 2 when it sails for the first time and 1 in 1million chains it will not sink lol basically build it in Belfast build it in Ireland make it like the R.M.S Titanic make it a Irish ship we can call Titanic in memory of the R.M.S Titanic and all the people that gone down with it.

does britain no longer build ships, much in the same way the usa industry no longer makes electronic products? you can't buy an american made computer or t.v. anymore, as pointed out by connor, evidently another "stupid" american! - gary pohlmann, old saybrook, ct. usa , 30/4/2012 21:36. Britain can build commercial ship potentially very competitively, but is being stopped by eu. Example is MARs ships, while they may cost a bit more to build here, the UK was forced to tender these out by eu. While Germany is building a similar but far smaller ship for no less than E340million but has not have to tender abroad, same for Italy and the Etna's and the Netherlands. The fact this pretend Titanic is being made in what is likely a state sponsored and subsidised yard by workers on too low a wage in China says it all. For Julie, Banbury Oxfordshire, 1/5/2012 7:08 to say that's the way of the world shows how dumbed down we have become on industry and matters.

How low can you go. Cashing in on a British disaster, and, to rub salt into the wounds having it built in China. There will be mugs out there that will want to sail on it though. Back in the 1910s 20s and 30s when the greatest ocean liners were built, these lines and builders were not looking at designs from a hundred years ago, and looking at naming it after a ship that sank with huge loss of life. Having it built in China and to sail from Britain says it all. Maximum profiteering.

To "your mom Atlantis" your inappropriate rant about the Royal Family has nothing to do with the story in question. The Queen is a fabulous lady who has devoted her life to her people and still is well into her eighties. On the subject of the Titanic 2 , I'm amazed it's taken this long for someone to do this, and why not nostalgia is big business, it is a shame it won't be built here in UK but that is the way of the world.

Why is that people have to 'Troll' the message boards and right random BS. The comments are meant to be about Titanic 2 not going off subject and talking about Our Queen, the commonwealth etc. Don't diss our monarchy! So disrespectful! As the Titanic 2, great idea. It's been 100 years nothing really to get upset about its old news. I'll hope to be one of the first to sail on her. :)

sorry about my ignorance as to the u.k. and the commonwealth. lock me in the tower and throw away the key. my point is, these ships were symbols of british ingenuity and craftsmanship, it seems regretful that the new ship not be built in britain, or ireland. one hears of the economic troubles in britain, ireland here quite often.. these ships could have gone a long way to alleviate some of that. does britain no longer build ships, much in the same way the usa industry no longer makes electronic products? you can't buy an american made computer or t.v. anymore, as pointed out by connor, evidently another "stupid" american!

To be followed by the, Empress of Ireland 2, Doa Paz’s 2, Lancastria 2 and finally the Wilhelm Gustloff 2. You sick piece of ____Clive Palmer . He is using the name for a pet project nobody would have heard of had he not named it Titanic 2. Some publicity is not worth it, he should rename it and crawl back from the swamp he came from.
