The wife of a millionaire businessman stabbed herself to death just days after the birth of their first grandchild.

The body of Bernadette McConchie, 57, was found at the £700,000 home she shared with her husband, Neil.

Friends said the mother-of-two and her husband, a former Tesco director, had recently returned from holiday together.

Mrs McConchie’s body was discovered just after 5pm on Wednesday at the sprawling five-bedroom home she had lived in for the past 12 years.

She had died from a single stab wound.

Last night neighbours in the upmarket village of Milton Malsor, Northamptonshire, spoke of their  shock at her death.

One woman, who asked not to be named, said: ‘It just makes no sense. Bernie was a really nice  person who had just had the best possible news about her first grandchild.

‘She never showed any signs that anything was wrong.

‘Something catastrophic must have happened.’

Janis Griffin, who lives opposite, said: ‘We saw her on Monday, she asked whether we had heard her news. She said her son and his partner had their first baby about two weeks ago.

‘She was very excited about it. She had lots to look forward to in her life.’

Irish-born Mrs McConchie worked at Wootton Primary School, in Northamptonshire, before retiring several years ago.

Her husband used to be a divisional director for Tesco and is now managing director of Lloyd Fraser, a warehousing and distribution firm he founded in 1987 at a former aerodrome near Lutterworth,  Leicestershire.

The company has an annual  turnover in excess of £50million and employs 500 people at 20 sites across the country.

One of Mrs McConchie’s friends revealed she had appeared agitated after returning from a holiday with her husband recently.

Sam Madan, the owner of the local post office, said: ‘One of her friends came into the shop yesterday and I told her what happened.

‘She said she was supposed to meet up with her, and Bernie had been getting distressed. She had just got back from holiday.’

Julie Horod, a former school dinner lady who worked with Mrs McConchie, described her friend as a ‘very loving and caring person’. ‘I can’t believe she has gone. My heart goes out to her family,’ she added.

Inspector Daemon Johnson, of Northamptonshire police, said: ‘There are no suspicious circumstances and we are not looking  for anyone else in connection with her death.’

Oh this poor woman! I don't understand though how anyone can stab themselves 'multiple times'. If I had the nerve to stab myself just once them it would put me off trying it again! We don't know the state of her mind when she did this, so I can only guess that the poor lady must have been very deeply troubled.

In reply to Norman. It is clear that so many of us do not have close friends we can trust or who care a jot. And we are alienated from our families. We live in a very cruel world. Very very sad.

God bless her soul, i dont think we will ever get to hear as to why she felt that there was not a single soul, on the planet who could never been able to help her..... Thats so very sad. My condolences to the family...

When my son died, I felt actual physical pain. I thought of this when I read your article, and wondered how much pain this poor woman must have been in, to be oblivious to the pain those stab wounds were causing. It made me so sad, when I read the heartfelt comments from her former students, she was obviously a lovely person. What a waste!

Wow, she lived so near me. How tragic, thoughts with her family. x

Poor lady.

Seems very hard to believe someone could have the strength and determind mindframe to give themselves multiple stab wounds. It just doesn't make sense. Poor lady..... You have to wonder what caused such provocation. We don't know the finer details however going off this story alone...

Poor woman. She must have felt desperate to do that.

May this lady now rest peacefully. So tragic.

Omg how dose someone stab their self, poor woman
