Clever accessorising: Judi's Paisley scarf brightens up her outfit

Relegate statement necklaces and bright clutches to the back of the wardrobe â€" this season, the fashion world has gone crazy for paisley.

As shown by Dame Judi Dench on the red carpet at the recent premiere of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, a colourful scarf with the vibrant print is all you need to brighten up a monochrome outfit.

The design, which originated in India and represents vegetables, was introduced to Britain in the 1800s, where it was woven in the town of Paisley (hence the name).

The look was trendy in the Sixties and Seventies, and now it has bounced back on to the  catwalks at Jonathan Saunders, Stella McCartney, Jil Sander and DG.

To avoid looking like a hippie, go for a subtle nod to the trend with a silk scarf.

Pair with minimal accessories and simple, tailored outfits.

Tie a Paisley scarf to your bag for a chic, Sloaney look or, if you are caught in an April shower, copy the Queen and wear it as a headscarf.
