He's been notably quiet on Twitter since they announced their break-up three weeks ago.
But Kris Smith has now spoken for the first time since ending his four-year relationship with Dannii Minogue, admitting how hard it's been for them.
Appearing on Australian breakfast show The Circle, he said: 'It's a struggle, but you know we're the best of friends and we have a massive mutual respect for one another.

'Just taking it one day at a time.'
The former rugby league player, 33, admitted their 21-month-old son Ethan was helping them get through the difficult time.
Kris gushed: 'He's sensational.
'He just picks you up every single day. He's a blessing.'
Dannii, 40, and Kris confirmed speculation they had split in simultaneous announcements on their Twitter pages on April 4.

Former X Factor judge Dannii said she would be 'retreating' for a while from the micro-blogging page, but ended up returning on April 16 to tweet about Australia's Got Talent.
Dannii filmed her role as a judge at the initial auditions earlier this year, but the show is only being broadcast now, so it likely she is encouraged by her bosses to tweet about AGT.
Meanwhile, Dannii has been further rocked by her former romance with X Factor colleague Simon Cowell becoming public knowledge.

While the singer herself hasn't commented on the reports, Cowell's publicist confirmed the music mogul did have a relationship with Dannii in 2007 - the year before she met Kris.
Dannii and Kris met on holiday in Ibiza in August 2008 where the male model was celebrating his 30th birthday.
On April 15, Dannii made her first public appearance as she inducted her friend Molly Meldrum in the Australian TV Hall Of Fame at the Logie Awards.
It the first time she had attended an event since it was revealed she had split from Kris and of her affair with Cowell.

Cyd, if you are trying to suggest that Kris slept with Dannii to get where he is now - Dannii did the same with Cowell when she landed her role on the X Factor. Whether you like it or not, your precious Dannii is no angel. One thing you cannot deny is that Kris appears to be a devoted dad to Ethan - he never stops talking about him.

@ Citizen, UK - Chris Smith was a rugby player and has become a model much in demand before meeting Danni. And I know very few men more handsome and with more charm. And his behaviour seems particularly correct to me.

Why do these stupid people want all their private lives spread over the newspapers. Who cares about Kris Smith or Danni Minogue. It was plain for all to see the way she and Cowell were behaving, nad I would place a sure bet that Dixon is lined up for it too.

Kris Smith is a nobody who had a long relationship with Danni and should just shut up and be a father to his child and do and say decent things for the mother of that child.
