A man and a child have been found dead after their boat capsized at a weir on the River Avon.

Both were declared dead at the scene.

Two more children, who were recovered from the water earlier, are being treated in Warwick Hospital.

One of the children, who was found unconscious in the water, is in a serious but stable condition. The second child was described as conscious but poorly.

The adult and three children had been in a small rowing boat which had capsized, the ambulance service said.

Emergency services were first called to the weir incident at around 5.35pm, after the small boat the four were travelling in capsized.

One of the two children recovered from the water had suffered a cardiac arrest and was given CPR by the resident and the policeman before paramedics arrived.

The child has now been transferred to Birmingham Children's Hospital, Warwickshire Police said.

The names of the dead will not be released until formal identification processes have been completed, police said.

The incident prompted a major recovery operation involving Warwickshire Police, West Midlands Ambulance Service, Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service and Severn Area Rescue.

A resident called Ali told Sky News: 'Everybody's quite devastated really by what's happened, the village is pulling together.

'Everybody's doing everything they can, it's amazing to see the emergency services so determined to find these people who are missing.

'It's my understanding that it's a family who had the accident. There is a weir, quite a nasty weir, the river level is very high at the moment, the current is very fast, I think they just got to the weir, and the boat went straight over it, and there's nothing they could have done to stop that happening.'

She said the emergency services were 'freezing cold'.

Terribly sad. R.I.P

Sincere sympathy for all those involved. Such a tragic end to a family out having fun. Very, very sad.

Where were the Fire Brigade? Were they going through their health and safety assessment or trying to find the form to see if this falls under the £400 charge category? - Michael Scott, Birmingham, 13/5/2012 2:16

Crass remark, particularly given that the report clearly states that the Fire Service were involved in the rescue. Whilst you sit in front of your computer sneering, these people were diving into a freezing cold, swollen river in the darkness. And particularly crass when it's only a couple of days since the report of firefighters going into a burning building to rescue children.

From The BEEB - "West Midlands Ambulance Service said the boat capsized after going down the weir at about 17:30 BST." Again such a pointless waste of life.Rather like the barbies in the tents to keep warm and then carbon monoxide poisoning.I wonder, was everybody wearing life jackets ? The fact that the father was anywhere near the weir in the first place in a rowing boat, shows he knew nothing about water, currents and associated risks, and should never have been there in the first place.Just no common sense at all. RIP I am so sorry.

Although this is a very sad story it was good to see that a member of the public and a policeman were able to administer CPR which proberly has saved the life of one of the children.

If that photo is accurate is suggests there is a green barrage across the river above the weir to stop boats getting through? As this one clearly did is that photo no longer accurate? Terrible to read that a perhaps foolish act -taking a boat on a river swollen with floodwater- has had such tragic results.

I do quiry the wisdom of boating near such a dangerous stretch of water, and at a time when light is begining to fade. Nevertheless, two people have tragically lost their lives. I really hope the two surviving children make a good recovery.

I am finding this story rather difficult to follow, it implies they had all been rescued safely, but now I am sad to read (whatever next 01:19) that an adult and a child have died. I am very, very sorry. Just wondering, were they all wearing life jackets? It's so important that the first thing you do when you buy a boat is to buy good life jackets for everyone using it, they come in all sizes, and are bright orange/red so very high-visibility.

Well done to the residents also, keeping the emergency services fed and warm. It's still a Glorious Country we live in.

Well done to the police. Where would we all be without you !.
