Paul McCartney gave a concert men half his age could only dream of pulling off in Mexico City.
The Beatles star, who will turn 70 in June, played 40 songs during his three hour set on Thursday night.
The free Mother's Day concert was sponsored by Mexico City's mayor's office.

Still a legend: Paul McCartney gave a concert men half his age could only dream of pulling off in Mexico City on Thursday night

Epic scale: Approximately 150,000 people packed the square for the free show
Paul duly celebrated all the Mexican mothers- who are honoured locally on May 10- in addition of course to his wife Nancy Shevell.
He said in Spanish: 'This tune is precisely for all you mamacitas,' to general delight.
The occasion certainly marks some welcome progress since the only Beatles show ever due to be held there was cancelled at the last minute by the government in 1965.

Special celebration: Paul made mention of all the Mexican mothers- who are honoured locally on May 10- in addition of course to his wife Nancy Shevell

no slowing down: Paul recently told Rolling Stone that he doesn't believe in 70

Worked the crowd: Paul demonstrated admirable local nouse when he referred to City residents as 'Chilangos,' a colloquial term for capital-born Mexicans
McCartney played up to his audience, shouting the slang 'Viva Mexico, cabrones!' (Long Live Mexico, you b******s)! at the end of Elanor Rigby.
He demonstrated admirable local nouse when he referred to City residents as 'Chilangos,' a colloquial term for capital-born Mexicans.
Carlos Cordero, a music student in Mexico City, told the Wall Street Journal, 'Do you know why Mexico is among the best audiences in the world? People here go to concerts to escape from an everyday hell people live in.'

Playing to the masses: The size of the crowd was all too clear to see from this aerial shot of the square
'Thatâs why artists and musicians feel Mexican fans give their all in concerts.'
'Iâm happy this concert is at least making people forget for two or three hours about the (July 1) elections, the government and the current social and economical situation Mexico is going through,' he added.
Javo Hirashi, a 27-year-old musician from Mexico City explained: 'Most of the people here are of the political left, theyâre those who donât have the money to buy a ticket to see Paul.'Â

Landmark: The occasion certainly marks some welcome progress since the only Beatles show ever due to be held there was cancelled at the last minute by the government in 1965
And Paul was all too happy to give them the high-energy show their loyalty deserved.
As he told Rolling Stone recently, 'Iâm never going to believe Iâm 70, I donât care what you say.'

Devoted: Fans poured into the square in droves to see the pop icon perform

What did those poor Mexicans do to deserve that?

It is amazing that Mr McCartney still uses that Hofner Violin Bass. Surely he has found (or been given) a much better guitar, even allowing for the fact that he is left-handed and left-handed basses are rare (or at least good ones). Even in the 1960s, Rickenbacker gave him an instrument, and Rickenbacker basses are the instrument of choice with bassists (along with Fender Precision/Jazz basses). The Hofner is a bit limited - its neck has only 22 frets as opposed to the usual 24, for example. Bruce Springsteen is 62, and he will be rocking in the same old way when he is 70. He too still has lots of hair, and it is brown - one wonders whether Mr McCartney has coloured grey hair - it matters in rock stars who still perform regularly. Regular performance - Mr MaCartney surely still plays his instruments every day (Play in an Day - the book written by the recently dead Bert Weedon), so he is able to get up on stage and perform, rather than try and do it jus t for a month and no more.

Way to go, Macca. None of these folks were paying customers and yet Paul gave them an even longer show than he usually does. Class act.
