Verdict: It feels more like ten
Let down by the script: Blunt and Segel
Jason Segel - last seen dancing with Muppets - is a San Francisco sous-chef who sacrifices his career to be with his gorgeous, intelligent British fiancée (Emily Blunt) as she takes a college job in frozen Michigan.
But he becomes unfulfilled and unhappy. So their marriage is postponed, seemingly for ever.
Segel and Blunt are two charming screen presences, and don’t even appear to bear any animosity towards each other for co-starring in Jack Black’s Gulliver’s Travels. You get the feeling these are genuinely nice people.
The warmth of the scenes between them almost compensates for the bloated, aimless script by Segel and director Nicholas Stoller.
This engenders smiles rather than laughs as it contrives to keep the two leads apart for 124 minutes, padding out the time with irrelevant characters and unfunny comic scenarios that belong in different films.
Cut away the flab, and there’s probably an adorable hour-long movie in there. As this is a Judd Apatow production, the underlying cuteness is sabotaged by pointless profanity and gross sexual references.
It is also remarkably sexist, taking the side of the man to a ridiculous extent â€" even blaming the leading lady when her college professor (Rhys Ifans) kisses her. To my mind, she deserved our sympathy.
Unlike in The Amazing Spider-Man, Ifans does not respond to misfortune by turning into a gigantic green lizard and trashing Manhattan. But it might have livened things up if he had.
