It is shaping up to be a big summer for London, with Britainâs main metropolis coming into global focus as the Olympic Games follow on from the Diamond Jubilee festivities.
But the bad news for would-be tourists is that the UK capital is the worldâs priciest city for a night out â" at least according to the âTripIndexâ, a new survey that assesses the cost of a hotel room, dinner, drinks and taxis in landmark locations across the planet.

Sky high: London is ranked as the world's most expensive city destination this summer
The research, carried out by travel reviews website TripAdvisor, estimates that the average cost of an evening on the town for two visitors to London â" during the high summer months of June, July and August â" will add up to a significant £330.45.
In contrast, Hanoi in Vietnam was rated as the city offering best value for a 24-hour stay, costing a comparatively small amount of £89.93.
The cost of a hotel room this summer â" including during the 17 days of the Olympic Games in July and August â" was a clear factor in Londonâs expensive ranking.
The precise figures were reached by adding up the price of one night in a double four-star hotel room, cocktails for two, dinner for two and a return taxi trip (two miles each way).
The calculated price of a night in four-star accommodation in London (£230.39) saw the city outstrip other European capitals â" including Oslo (£140.11 for a four-star hotel, leading to a night-out total of £319.62), Paris (£195.40, leading to £306.76), Stockholm (£139.34, leading to £302.46), and Moscow (£156.69, leading to £274.17).
New York â" traditionally considered an expensive destination â" was also deemed to be cheaper than London, with the average cost of a hotel room posited as £217.64, leading to an overall figure for a night out of £290.89.
âTripIndex helps travellers to see wher e their pound goes furthest,â says Emma Shaw of TripAdvisor.
âThe list shows that many Asian cities, along with some European cities â" like Warsaw and Sofia â" are very affordable once youâre on the ground.â
âSome cities traditionally considered expensive â" like London, Paris and New York â" actually cost three times more than the cheaper cities in the list for an evening out.â

Fair deal: Hanoi, with its elegant opera house, is rated as the world's least expensive city for a 24-hour stay
Warsaw rates as a bargain destination despite the current European Championships pushing up the price of a hotel, as football fans seek accommodation.
The average cost of a four-star hotel in the Polish capital is listed as £69.66, contributing to an overall cost for a night out of £127.30. The Bulgarian capital Sofia is even cheaper, at a total figure of £132.38, despite a marginally higher hotel price of £74.08 per night.
However, the best rates are found in Asia.
Beijing is surprisingly rated as the second cheapest city after Hanoi, at £67.72 for a hotel room, £17.48 for dinner for two, and total amount of £101.37.
Bangkok in Thailand (£51.68 for a hotel, £103.38 in total), Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia (£72.32 for a hotel, £123.86 in total) and Jakarta in Indonesia (£79.15 for a hotel, £136.02 in total) also ranked highly in terms of value for money.

Sounds like Trouble, US, 13/6/2012 16:37, is having sour grapes from not being able to afford to take her unathletic children to be inspired by world class athletes at the Olympics. Sad that people feel compelled to hit-out at things they can't enjoy just to mar the enjoyment of others--narrow-minded and pathetic.

1. let me say I love London. 2. its the best city (aside from NY, but its like NY cleaner). anyway. 3. who would actually want to attend any olymics since like 1980. before it became so commerical and crass and yucky. Now its athletes, from where? the home gym that mom/dad paid for from time little jimmy was 2 months old. COME ON. who reallycares anymore. We are planning a UK trip for our chilren ages 8-12 but said no way to this summer, too silly, who wants to see this? No one r eally. I dont' understand why cities still want the olympics. they cost more than worth. status? not really? in fact its anti status, makes you dull. so why? some silly pols want it to make money . PERIOD policiticans sell buiding rights, sell non use land, etc. its all a big scam. I hope the olympics never come back to the US. Let the US 'athletes' (really, thats all they ever did) go somewhere else. They don't make me proud, they make me sick
