A couple wrongly suspected of a âsham marriageâ had their wedding day ruined when police arrested them in front of 50 guests moments before the ceremony was about to begin.
Neil McElwee and his pregnant Chinese fiancée Yanan Sun were held for five hours despite officers allegedly realising they had made a mistake within 40 minutes of the swoop.
Miss Sun, 20, was left in tears as she was forced to remove her prized wedding gown and put on a special forensic outfit instead.

Chef Mr McElwee, 25, and his fiancée were kept for an hour and a half in separate vehicles outside the Guildhall in Londonderry before being taken to cells.
They were finally released without charge when their solicitor, Karina Breslin-Carlin, got involved. They were married the next day in Castlederg in July last year.
Yesterday, the three officers who led the swoop were disciplined after the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland upheld a complaint that they had âunlawfully arrested and detainedâ
But Mr McElwee, from Strabane, said the findings of the report and actions against the officers involved in his case did not go far enough.
âWe could only have that day once in our lives, yet it was taken away from us,â he told the Derry Journal.
âThe police could have done their jobs right and saved us a lot of trouble.â

Their solicitor will continue to fight for the ombudsman to uphold the allegation that there was an âunecessary delayâ in police releasing the couple.
Revealing how their wedding was ruined, Mr McElwee, who became a father six months ago, told BBC News: âWe were excited and looking forward to getting married.
âWe were so happy when we saw each other at the Guildhall.

âThen everything just changed. Our day crumbled in front of us, it was awful.
âWe had no reason to think anything sinister would take place.
âThe room was full of plain clothes police officers.
âIn front of all our guests they came in and said they had reason to believe it was a 'sham marriage'.
âThey based the operation in an anonymous tip-off letter.
âThey held us for five hours. Within 40 minutes they knew they had made a mistake.
âThe officers have been disciplined but I'm not satisfied. We went through such a bad time, it was torment.
âWe try to forget what happened on our wedding day. We never ever talk about our wedding.
âMy wife has not been the same since,â he added.
Ms Breslin-Carlin, the McElwee familyâs solicitor, said: âThe police had time to redeem this situation so the couple could have carried on with their day, but they did not.
âThis was a farce. A bridal couple were kept in a car park for an hour and a half in separate vehicles.
âThey were then detained in separate cells for two hours. This is not good enough under any circumstances.â
A PSNI spokesperson confirmed that as a result of the ombudsmanâs investigation three police officers were disciplined.

Yet again the police go after the easy targets.

I hate to say it but you can't blame them, this is a very common problem, I have friends from Thailand and the Phillipines who have been very up front with what they are doing, one lady I know married a much older guy and is just hanging around until he passes away, she gets the house and everything!!! My ex met a women from Thailand online and is marrying her very soon, they only knew eachother for a few weeks and he has already put her in his Will. I'm not saying all of these marriages are fake but lets take the blinkers off and lets be honest, it happens.

To cut the long story short - " We want some compensation"

"Well, in reality it is a sham. I am sure she is only marrying him for the passport." - Jane, London ============================================================================================= What a sad individual you are, and what gives you the right to comment on something you know nothing about. You should always reserve judgment until you are in possession of all the facts. To be honest, I felt pretty sickened by your comment.

When was the last time you saw 50 guests at a sham marriage? Think of the cost of it. The whole point is not to waste money, but to get married as cheaply as possible. Coppers should have known within 2 minutes of entering the room it wasn't a sham just from the sheer number of guests. Coppers disciplined? Tell us what action was really taken against them? Just a verbal telling off I bet. Coppers look after themselves, we all know that.

Could you explain why you're sure please? Right now you've come across as a complete idiot. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt though if you have a compelling reason to be sure.
