Pin your hopes on a brooch

Pin your hopes on a brooch

The Duchess of Cambridge’s Diamond Jubilee outfits have been endlessly analysed â€" from the daring scarlet hat she wore on the flotilla to her well-worn nude LK Bennett heels.

Yet one subtle touch escaped notice, until now. As she boarded the royal barge, the Spirit Of Chartwell, Kate wore a tiny gold brooch of two dolphins pinned to her red Alexander McQueen dress.

The pin was a gift from the Royal Navy Submarine Service â€" and in wearing it Kate proved what fashion insiders have known for a while: that the brooch is back.

With retro ladylike fashion dominating the catwalks, it’s no wonder this classic accessory has been re-invented by designers including Marni, Lanvin and Oscar de la Renta, and can also be bought on the High Street.

So how does one wear one? Forget simply pinning a brooch to your lapel or on your right or left breast â€" instead, try wearing one on the collar of a button-up shirt or pinned to a long string of beads to make a statement necklace.

They also look great pinned at the side of a wrap dress.  Just don’t buy one that says your name.

They never went away - I have a box full of brooches dating from the 1930s to the present. Some of them are fab costume stuff from the 80s.

" Follow Kate's style: Pin your hopes on a rich, grieving, motherless Prince marrying you "

Ohhh, maybe broches will become trendy again. Must root mine out! Kate's one is fab on her!

Before we get a 100 comments as to why the Duchess of Cambridge received a brooch from the Royal Navy Submarine Service, Catherine's husband the Duke of Cambridge, as of 2006 is Commodore-in-Chief of the Royal Navy Submarine Service
