Shocking study reveals brain scan results look different if they are viewed on a Mac or PC

  • Data from 30 brain scans was feed into the computer using a package called FreeSurfer
  • Even version of Mac OS created different results

Software used to analyse medical brain images gives significantly different results if it’s run on a Apple Mac or PC, according to new research.

The findings by a team of German researchers has raised concerns
about potential problems with software analysis.

Data from 30 brain scans was fed into the computer using a package called FreeSurfer.

The differences in cortical grey matter volumes between FreeSurfer version v4.3.1 and v5.0.0 on a Mac (OSX 10.5).

Variation: The differences in cortical grey matter volumes between FreeSurfer version v4.3.1 and v5.0.0 on a Mac (OSX 10.5)

The differences in subcortical grey matter volumes between FreeSurfer version v4.3.1 and v5.0.0 on a Mac (OSX 10.5).

Contrasting results: Marked differences in subcortical grey matter volumes between FreeSurfer version v4.3.1 and v5.0.0 on a Mac (OSX 10.5)

The software is one of the major medical image analysis programmes used to measure the size of different parts of the brain.

The research team ran the software on Windows and on Macs running  different versions of Mac OS.

They found that not only did Windows and Mac OS installs of the software produce different results - but the version of Mac OS also had an impact, reported Gizmodo.

The findings by a team of German researchers has now raised concerns about the way crucial scans such as CT and MRI are analysed in routine practice.

The findings by a team of German researchers has raised concerns about potential discrepancies with software analysis

Each time the software was used it measured the size and thickness of various structures of the brain.

The level of differences between computers varied depending on brain location.

For Mac vs PS and Mac OS updates it was closer to 2-5 per cent.

But there was a 15 per cent variation just because of a Mac OS update.

The discrepancy between the results remains unclear.

On the U.S. National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, the abstract concludes:

'The main conclusion is that in the context of an ongoing study, users are discouraged to update to a new major release of either FreeSurfer or operating system or to switch to a different type of workstation without repeating the analysis; results thus give a quantitative support to successive recommendations stated by FreeSurfer developers over the years.'

"Data from 30 brain scans was feed into the computer" Please, please, *PLEASE*, DM, hire a proofreader. One who is literate.

Can I point out the glaring error in the headline? A Mac is a PC, it is just a specific brand of PC. You may as well talk about differences between

The sample pictures which supposedly illustrate the differences between software versions are clearly not intended to be identical. If you look at the bar below each display you will see that the colour ranges are different. This will probably be the result of software settings selected by the user.

"A design job, such as a restaurant menu, or showbiz poster, of which I have done hundreds, looks so much better when created on a Mac" - Philip B It's not a question of which looks better, you muppet, it's which is more accurate.

Both pictures currently are showing the results on a Mac computer..........so where are the pictures run on a Windows machine then ?. Come on DM, sort it out.

The FreeSurfer FAQ points out that different versions (and by extension, platform) of FreeSurfer will produce variation with the same data set. They advise using a single version across a dataset, which has to be collected specifically to allow comparison. Changing underlying shared libraries (as may happen with an OS upgrade) may also produce varying results.Given that tools like this are used for comparative and statistical studies, as long as the results are consistent for the dataset, the results are useful. The test carried out is invalid within the terms of the software design.

was feed? Please correct!

Come in. The good news is, we thought your brain had shrunk to pea-size,... come on now, up-off the floor, ...but then we realised we had updated our software! So, it's 'as you were', all systems go. Well, it will be when we reinstall the previous version. Technology, wonderful when it works, so keep performing those integrity tests.

'...Well designers have know this for years. A design job, such as a restaurant menu, or showbiz poster, of which I have done hundreds, looks so much better when created on a Mac than a machine running Windows even when using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop on both machines. I know - I have proved it.'
