For all the mothers who maintain that looking after a toddler can seem like the most exhausting activity in the world, you are not wrong.

But according to a new study, it is the toddlers who should be complaining of exhaustion.

Research shows that their daily antics can use up the equivalent adult energy of 83 rounds in a boxing ring.

Experts at Growing Up Milk Info have found that the average toddler expends the same energy as if an adult did 249 minutes in the boxing ring, ran 30 miles, or cycled 82 miles at 12-14mph.

The survey, called First Steps Research, highlights how a toddler’s daily antics - including running around, playing in a sandpit, climbing stairs and playing in a play park - are the same as adults climbing 2,980 metres - twice the height of Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain, which stands at 1,344m.

This can also equate to 300 hours of competitive football - that’s more than three full football matches in a row or a rowing session of six hours.

Dietitian Dr Carrie Ruxton said: 'If a little one saw their mum or dad run a marathon every day they would be pretty impressed.

Of course, parents experience the same positive emotions when they witness the many milestones their toddler achieves each week...they are just unaware how much extra nutrition is needed to fuel this amazing development between the ages of one and three years.'

The study found toddlers need three times as much energy as adults and four times the amount of iron and vitamin C

In order to illustrate the difference between a toddlers' and an adult’s diet, the First Steps Research worked out the average calories required to support a toddler on a daily basis by taking into consideration their weight, resting metabolic rate and energy necessary for growth, development and activity.

Each of these factors, when compared with an average 70kg adult, equated to a 3,600 calorie daily diet for an adult - enough to run marathons, climb Ben Nevis twice and box more than seven fights consecutively.

The survey found that 78 per cent of parents think that if a child eats the same meals as them in smaller portions their dietary meets are met, but in fact, toddlers require far more.

According to the study, they need three times as much energy as adults, four times the amount of iron and vitamin C, three times the amount of calcium, zinc and vitamin A, far more fats and less salt.

Sooooo how many calories should a toddler be having!? - niki, beds, 24/6/2012 9:11................"According to the study, they need three times as much energy as adults" Which I interpret as they need 3 x 2000 calories. 6,000 calories seems pretty high to me for a toddler and I dont even have kids. Make sense of the next bit if you can "highlights how a toddler’s daily antics - including.... are the same as adults climbing 2,980 metres.....This can also equate to 300 hours of competitive football - that’s more than three full football matches in a row? Has someone forgot their tablets?

Oh the DM does love to confuse. Which is it to be? Children are al lazy and fat from sitting at X-Boxes all day and guzzling sugar filled drinks, which our esteemed leaders must tax, to save them from themselves. Or they are normal healthy little darlings who run us ragged. PS. Just heard that my grandchild (to be) is 7.6mm., so this is important.

You get the running and yahooing but it is the constant yapping that really just does your head in. Rain is wet because it just is. No. Your sister did not look at you 'funny'. Yes that police man is the one who come round to check you are having your naps. No I am not interested in seeing your boy bits. You will eat the meal I made for you and it will not involve chocolate sauce. Shaun the Sheep is finished and I cannot travel back in time to make it come on the telly again. Just reading that and it sounds like dealing with my boyfriend not a 2 year old.

I believe it. My granddaughter runs everywhere at full tilt. She's almost three. I've had to learn how to jog just to keep up.

No wonder my two year old is so skinny! She eats for england but is dinky! Maybe thats why the last few pregnancy pounds have fallen off as well......

why do people even have kids makes no sense when you can be out enjoying the world - Young Bradley , The Heartland of USA, 22/06/2012 20:17 If your parents had adopted this approach, then you wouldn't have had the opportunity to make such an idiotic comment!

It's really cute seeing all these cute child anecdotes :') Timelord, London, your comment made my day! XD

I'm indebted to my toddlers for keeping me trim trying to keep up with my 2 yr old boy especially. When I worked I was careful, watched my diet and did more gym but weighed more!
