UK days out: Beale Park, Reading

In the latest of our occasional series on visit-worthy UK locations great for a family day out, Mark Hughes-Morgan runs the rule over Beale Park, a green space in Reading with a wildlife twist. Which means cute and cuddly baby ring-tailed lemurs, and the wonders of Animal Athletics.

I know, baby ring-tailed lemurs, only a few weeks old.

No, that child is trying to hold his breath as long as an otter!

That's in the Animal Athletics - ten events around the park where the youth 'compete' with the wildlife.

Someone just stamped my hand...

That's because you've completed the new Mini Beast trail - taking in the lemurs, meerkats, wallabies and more. This park is about sparky little gems you see close up rather than distant, roary things. There are also ten owls, and 130 other wild birds (including peacocks roaming free).

What else is new?

There's a Diamond Jubilee Garden and a pond-dipping platform.

I'm exhausted

There is plenty to tire you out in 320 acres hunkered down next to the Thames. Children will love Little Tyke Village and a renovated adventure playground.

I want to arrive by boat

Are there hippos in the water?

'Fraid not, but there's an annual Beale Park Boat Show (www.bealeparkboatshow.co.uk) in June.

But that one's tiny!

This is a centre for model boat fans, too.
