Mario, that beloved Nintendo computer game character, was never much good at perspective.
But that hasn't stopped him joining street artist Chris Carlson to give us all an intriguing look at how those 3D perspective pictures are drawn onto the pavement with little more than chalk and ingenuity.
Chris, who spent 11 hours creating this image of Mario jumping over a Nintendo game pad on a street in Denver, set up a time-lapse camera, which takes an image every few seconds, to compress his 11-hour art stint into just four minutes.

From the video, we can see some of the tools used to create the image.
Most important - other than the chalk - seems to be the ruler. With this, Chris can ensure he keeps hisperspective, mapping out a wireframe version.
Within the first 20 seconds, you can see how, thanks to some simple lines, the 2D canvas of the street can become a depth-filled vista, giving the illusion of 3D.
Once Chris has made his 'pixels', he is ready to draw Mario, and within seconds, the cheery moustache-face appears out of the asphalt - while the Super Mario theme plays in the background.
Once Mario is fully drawn, Chris turns to the gamepad, seeting the little plumber up for a jumping challenge
A lighter shade of red around Mario helps give us a bit of depth and then, scrubbing out his guide-lines, Chris stands back to admire his creation.
The gamepad gets the same treatment, and lighter shades again help give a depth illusion.
And then the image is complete, and we can enjoy Mario beaming back out of the pavement, leaping over his gamepad on the way to his next mushroom.
