Fisherman goes angling for carp... and discovers fish with the body of a goldfish, head of a roach and the fin of a bream

When angler Mark Sawyer went fishing in Cambridgeshire, all he wanted was to catch a carp.

Instead he ended up with a goldfish, a roach, and a bream - but, bizarrely, all in one fish.

The Frankenfish even manages to put the cartoon-y Blinky the Fish from The Simpsons to shame when it comes to bizarreness levels.

But unlike Springfield's most famous fish, which is the product of Mr Burn's toxic dumping, there is nothing in the water to suggest this mutant is a result of a nuclear mutation.

What is this? The bizarre 'Frankenstein' fish, which seems to be part-roach, part-goldfish, and part-bream

At first Mark, 53, thought it was a common brown goldfish but when he looked closer he realised it was no normal catch.

He said the fish appears to have the head of a roach, the body and tail of a brown goldfish and the rear fin of a bream.

After photographing the oddity, Mark, the tackle editor for trade magazine the Angling Times, threw it back into Magpie Lake in Cambridge.

He said: 'I have shown the picture to a number of marine boffins who say it is definitely the result of mixed parentage.

'I have caught thousands and thousands of fish but have never seen anything like it before. It is a proper oddity.

'The head resembles more of a roach, its lips aren’t quite right. It has the body of a normal goldfish, its anal fin resembles a bream and the tail is of a fan-tailed goldfish.'

Dr Paul Garner, a fisheries ecologist, said: 'The head is more carp but the back end and extended fins and tail belong to fan-tailed goldfish.

'Goldfish and carp and from the same family of fish and it would not be uncommon for them to come together.

What is very unusual, however, is for a fisherman to catch one of their offspring.'

But another fish expert believes the odd specimen is the result of a fan-tailed goldfish and a normal goldfish mating.

Dr Mark Everard said it had probably been released into the lake from a private aquarium.

Now you decide...

This is so obviously a faked photo. As someone else has pointed out - even the man's left thumb is see-through !!

Why was I expecting it to have the head of a cockroach? Now that would have been something to see.

My goldfish is exactly like this but orange. If I could post a picture I would share as this shows that DM has obviously run out of things to write about!

It's a common Photoshop fish, recently introduced to the UK. It feeds mainly on desperate journalists and idiots

fish dont mate they spawn.10 million to 1 chance of the egg of a goldfish and the milt of any other fish creating this mutation.

Its a large and pretty crucian fantail hybrid

He is probably after the publicity for his paper. I do not think he would be an animal lover.

I used to have fancy goldfish which looked like these except their heads were rounder, maybe these are fancy ones mixed with regular ones... anyway the photo looks abit dodgy to me so who knows ;)

The angler looks very much like Jonathan Ross' brother, Paul

Is it a fancy-breed goldfish that's been released?
