Tokyo has been taken over by this giant robot - which is tasked with standing guard outside the country's newest tourist attraction.
The 18metre Gundam has taken pride of place in front of the DiverCity Tokyo Plaza complex - which houses the theme park of the animation series bearing the same name.
And weighing in at 35tonnes, it's a good job it has been nailed to the ground - because it would be likely to pack a serious King Kong style punch if it was ever let loose on the city.

And in the Experience Field area, visitors can view 1/1 Core Fighter Ver.GFT of the first series or the life-size bust of Strike Freedom Gundam Ver.GFT in the Seed Destiny series. Italian tour guide Marco Rondoni said on his visit: 'There is nothing similar in Italy.

Oh you guys don't know Gundam? This anime is way more popular than Transformers in Japan, and Its first appearance (1979) is before Transformers came out in the scene (1984). They even operate a "Gundam cafe," which serve foods and drinks that feature several items in the anime in Tokyo. This is not actually news for many Japanese... As someone already posted, this big statue has been publicly released since July 2009.

Come on, stuff like this is hardly revolutionary in Japan. It's just a giant model. Oh, and it's called Anime, and this particular one is of the subgenre Mecha. Just thought I'd put that out there.

It is nothing new. it was set up back in 2009. Gundam was a major character in a cartoon series. It was rather well known in East and South-east Asia.
